Passive voice is so passé
What’s wrong with this sentence? “A number of things are indicated by these results.”
It’s written in passive voice. Ugh! Changed to active voice, the sentence would read, “These results indicate a number of things.”
Here’s another example of passive voice: “The store owner was robbed by a masked intruder.”
In active voice, the sentence would read, “A masked intruder robbed the store owner.”
So what’s the big deal? Passive voice robs verbs of their power and weakens your writing. Active voice creates sharp, clear sentence construction. Imagine having to read an entire book written in passive voice – you’d be exhausted before you reached the end. Eliminate passive voice from your business and personal communications and you’ll come across as a much stronger writer.
